Xiaomi which is also known
as Apple of China, will be manufacturing some of its products in India starting this 2015.
Xiaomi is going to have partnership with a Taiwanese company called Inventec (which
makes notebooks, mobile phones and server products) over this venture. According
to Digitimes, they are looking to set up a production facility in Chennai by
the end of June or in early July this year. Inventec hasn't spoken about the
kinds of products it aims to manufacture in India.
The plant in Chennai is
expected to fulfill Xiaomi’s production demand for the next year or two, says
Digitimes. India has a very huge market for the Chinese company. Till now,
Xiaomi has launched 4 smartphones in the India so far i.e. Xiaomi Mi3 and Mi4,
Xiaomi Redmi Note and Redmi 1S. Xiaomi’s smartphones are priced so less that
it’s difficult for other companies to launch their smartphone at such cheaper price and features. Apart from this, the company’s decision to make its
devices in India means there’s a chance that their cost may be less in India as
compared to now.
Xiaomi has joined hands with
biggest online retailer in India i.e. Flipkart to sell its phones in the
nation. They are also planning to sell their products through its own Mi.com
portal in the future. Since the Indian government is doing everything that can
encourage foreign companies to work in India. So Xiaomi surely won’t be the
last to start manufacturing its devices on these shores. Company Chairman
Richard Lee has said that he expects the shipments of ODM/OEM devices to reach
100 million units by 2015, which is an almost 33% more than that in 2014.
