A mobile app “GPower” is
giving a ray of hope to the girls aged between 10-19 in the villages of some West
Bengal districts. It is a joint project of Accenture and NGO CINI (Child in
Need Institute) in Murshidabad and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal
in INDIA. In these areas child marriage and girl trafficking have been alarming
in the past few decades. So by using this app, they saved over 200 girls from
being trafficked or being a victim of child marriage. Indrani Bhattacharya,
Assistant director of CINI said that they conducted a survey on “what is the
condition of educational programs among girls in these 2 districts of West Bengal”
and after survey they came to know about the conditions of these child girls. So they started this program to save these girls.
People in these villages are
very poor, so education of girls was stopped and they were trafficked. So we
needed a software or application which could keep track of these girls and save them
from child marriage and girl child trafficking, told by Miss Indrani Bhattacharya,
Assistant director of CINI. She added that they launched the app in March 2014
which was a multi-programmed approach to save girl child. This program was
limited to 20 villages of West Bengal as they didn’t have enough funds but they had a huge success by saving over 200 girls. Then they had a target of
7000 girls from those 2 districts i.e. South 24 Parganas and Murshidabad in the
upcoming 3 years.
Bhattacharya says that this
app works on real time data and there are 2-3 stages. Firstly they trained
teachers or community facilitators and they provided them android with smartphones/tablets in which “GPower” app was installed. Now their job is to register all
the details of every girl aged between 10-19 so that they can track them using
cloud-based technology. It has a centralized server which is used for real time
data analysis. So necessary action is taken if anything wrong happened with
these girls.
