The Sea Tree: New Habitat for Species

Home is one of the basic necessities. Every creature on Earth needs a home where they feel safe and raise their young ones. And the Earth which is considered as a universal home is not properly used for coexistence. In real life, the population of many creatures such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and freshwater species has been decreasing at a very high rate which is close to 76 percent.

The modern day cities are falling short for the ever increasing population. It is this rate of development that is leading the modern people to exploit forest and its resources. Also this one of the main reason for spread of major diseases like Nipah, Hendra, Ebloa, Marburg and SARS which spread from wild animals to the farm animals and from them to the humans.

SEA TREE

This is a concern for all of us. Koen Olthius from Netherlands who works in an architectural firm called Waterstudio has come up with a great idea to help the animals that cannot leave the cities. Thus came into existence an idea of a structure called the Sea Tree.

As the name suggests, it is based on the idea of a tree. The design gets its basic idea from a floating oil platforms, large structures that are built in the ocean, used for storage. This shelved structure provides home for different species. This structure is extended even out of the ocean water which helps the birds to build their nests away from the city and its troubles.

In an interview to Fast Company, Olthius said that the divided the park zones in urban areas and placed them vertically on top of the other. They were inspired from a project which was developed in Holland where ecologists devised ways to provide habitat for animals that couldn’t be disturbed by people. One of the best ways to keep people away is construction of these Sea Trees in water.

Sea Tree is a project which is ready to be executed. Waterstudio also hopes that some oil companies will also help them with their design based on the existing oil platforms.
