Have you ever wondered
which is the most secured OS or if your OS is more secured than others. Well
according to a recent report by US National Vulnerability Database (NVD), it
has been found that Apple’s OS X was the most vulnerable to virus threats in
the year 2014.
As per the report from NVD
the least vulnerable operating system is Windows RT X followed by Windows Vista,
Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008,
Linux, iOS and the most vulnerable is OS X. It was seen that 7,038 new
vulnerabilities were added to the database last year which resulted in 19 new
vulnerabilities a day.
It has been found from the
report that out of the 7,038 vulnerabilities, 80 percent came via third-party
applications, 13 percent originated from operating systems and 4 percent
through the hardware devices. As compared to last year, in 2013 the
vulnerability number was as low as 4,794. The report also mentioned that out of
7,038 vulnerabilities, 68% fell under the medium severity level, 24% in the
high level and the left 8% fell under low severity level.
The report mentioned that,
in 2014, the OS X had 147 total vulnerabilities while iOS had 127 vulnerabilities,
Linux had 119 threats followed by Windows Server 2008 at 38 and Windows 7 had
36 vulnerabilities. But in case of OS X, NVD is counting all the versions
together.
The surprise that the NVD
report shows is that the Microsoft Windows OSs were normally seen and said to
be the most vulnerable OS while that of OS X as one of the secured OS. But the
reverse happened. But then also, in Microsoft, the Internet Explorer is on top of
the list of application vulnerability in the NVD list.
In terms of Application
vulnerability, the Internet Explorer is on top followed by Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Flash Player, Oracle Java, Mozilla Thunderbird, Firefox ESR,
Adobe Air, Apple TV, Adoe Reader, Adobe Acrobat and lastly Mozilla SeaMonkey.
