Some features
like ‘Find-my-iPhone’ on iOS or the ‘Android Device Manager’ can help you. But
if thief have snatched your smartphone, being capable of doing a lot of damage
before you realize the cost of losing your device.
Lock down your
iPhone's or Android smartphone's security settings before it up and disappears. That way, if the
most awful happens, at least you will have the satisfaction of having the
knowledge that whoever swiped your device will have little more than a
paperweight on their hands.
Block
access to Control Center [iOS]
first with iOS 7, i-Phones and i-Pads both have equipped with Control Center, a handy
slide-up window that gives you rapid admission to your smartphone Wi-Fi and
phone settings, media controls, alarms, notes, and the camera.
Because you
can use it from the lock-screen, Control Center makes it easy to put your i-Phoneor i-pad into "DND" mode without entering a password, or switch on
"flight mode" before your flight takes off.
unluckily, Control
Center as well makes it simple for anyone to access your iPhone or iPad camera,
alarm clock or wireless settings—allowing, say, a robber to set your stolen
device into flight mode, making the Find My iPhone app useless.
Recommendation:
obstruct admission to Control Center from your Device lock screen. No, you
won't be able to flip on "DND" with a swipe and a tap anymore, but
better be secured than sorry.
Encrypt
your data [Android]
Excellent news
for fresh buyers of new Android smartphones or tablets with android v5.0 (Lollipop)
coming pre-installed: The data on your smartphone is already encrypted, nearly unreadable
until it is unlocked with your password.
Older Android smartphones
and tablets, however—including those android smartphone that have been upgraded
to Android Lollipop—do not have encryption switched on by default. turning
it on is a matter of a few clicks, but it could take between half-an-hour (in
my case) to several hours before all your device data is completely encrypted,
and you won't be able to use your device during that time. You will need to
keep your smartphone plugged into its charger throughout the whole process.
Set your
iPhone/iPad to send a "ping" to Apple just before its battery dies
[iOS]
Here's the
last gasp for a missing iPhone or iPad that's run out of juice, leaving it
unable to send a "ping" to Find My iPhone. Tap Settings > iCloud > Find my
iPhone (or iPad),
then switch on the Send Last Location setting.
As the bright
print below the setting points out, your handset will send out a final ping
with position data to Apple's company servers, so at least you will be familiar
with where your iPhone or iPad was before it
died out.
