Smartphone Batteries are
the center of all the myths that surround a phone. Whatever features your phone
may have, if the battery gets empty quickly there is no point in having that
phone.
We have definitely encountered various myths as to how you can increase
your battery life or how using your phone in certain way improves the battery
capacity. Well, Today we have taken it upon ourselves to bust some of these
misconceptions and show you what actually happens with your battery!
Myth 1: Before the 1st
use of the phone you must charge it to 100 percent
I am sure many you
have heard of this myth. The truth is there isn’t much truth to it. A
smartphone battery works in optimum condition between 35- 80 percent. Since
most of the batteries have at least 40-50 percent out of the box you shouldn’t
have any problem on the using it. There is no need for calibration as those are
already tested at manufacturing time. However if your battery has a charge
lower than 30 percent on the first use then you should consider replacing it as
it indicates that the battery is old.
Myth 2: Keeping the battery
in cold will extend its life
Keeping your phone in a
cold place, like freezer, doesn’t extend your phone’s battery life. If anything
it only hampers it. Just like heat, cold is also bad for battery. The room
temperature is the optimum temperature for a phone and battery to be in. Also
keeping your phone in plastic pouches also reduces battery life as it’s hot
inside the plastic bag. Heating up a phone is really bad for the battery.
Myth 3: Charging the phone
overnight will damage battery life
This is one of the most
common myth that we encounter. Nowadays smartphones are “smart” enough to
realize that your phone is completely charged. This cuts off any further
charging. So there is no damage to the battery. However as we mentioned earlier
35-80 percent is the optimum range for battery. Keeping the phone charged in
this range will help extend your battery life.
Myth 4: Batteries have the
recollections of previous charging.
Many of us don’t charge
our batteries even when it’s at 50 percent or 60 percent thinking that frequent
charging will damage the battery. Not True. The battery just holds the charge.
It doesn’t know how much percent it holds. So even if it’s at a 60 or 70
percent go ahead and charge it.
Myth 5: Chargers other
than your smartphones brand will damage your phone
Not True! Whaaat!!? Yeah. Although
charging your phone with other companies charger will change the time it takes
to charge your phone however it WILL NOT damage your battery. For example you
can use a Sony charger to charge your Samsung phone. This of course holds true only
for standard smartphones. Nowadays we have batteries that get charged in 15
minutes or 30 seconds. For those phones you will have to use the prescribed
charger.
Myth 6: Using your phone
while charging reduces battery life
Not True. Using your phone
will charging does not harm your phone. It will charge itself in the same way
as if you are not using it. The speed of charging may slow down as there is
draining due to usage but other than that there are no problems. However we
don’t recommend making or taking calls when charging as there is an increase in
radiation when this happens and although your phone will be safe you may face
health hazards.
Myth 7: Using Internet
drains the battery most quickly.
Using Internet does drain
your battery however the real power drainer are 'games'. Games make use of the
graphics processor which uses enormous amount of battery charge. So for gamers
who play for long times maintaining the battery life is tricky.
Even playing games or
videos on the Internet will cause enormous draining of battery.
Myth 8: Task Manager help
improve battery life to a great extent.
Third party
apps DO NOT help in improving the battery life as much as the built in systems
do. Unless you have rooted your phone, there is no point in adding apps and
wasting storage. All the task managers do are automate the steps for reducing
battery usage. This can also be done manually without using any apps. That
being said some rooted apps do give a boost in battery performance.
Myth 9: Charging your
phone using the USB connected to the computer is harmful to the battery.
This is similar to using a
separate charger for charging the phone. The rate of charging may be reduced as
the output at the USB port may not be that high but it will not damage the
battery. The charging electronics is present in the device being charged. This
eliminates any chance of overload on the battery.
Myth 10: Shutting down the
phone reduces battery life.
False. Keeping the phone
switched on while not using drains the battery as it has to keep the underlying
tasks working. However shutting down shuts these processes and thus avoid
wastage of battery charge. If anything, shutting down your phone just resets
the battery functions and is thus beneficial.
BONUS: Tips to improve
battery life.
- Ideal state of charging is
between 35-80 percent. So keep your phone charged at this capacity.
- Keep your phone in
balanced charge as high charges are not good for a LI-ion battery.
- Avoid keeping your phone
in places with extreme high or low temperatures.
