It would seem Micromax has proved itself.
It has defeated Samsung in India. Well at least according to a research by Counterpoint.
The company has outsold Samsung mobile in the Indian mobile market (not the
smartphone market where it is still remain second to the company), says the
report from the counterpoint.
According to the report, “the smartphone
segment grew at 68 % per annum in 2nd quarter of 2014 in India and
Indian origin brands shared more than two-thirds of the total mobile-phone
shipments and more than half of the smartphone shipments.”
The report also names Micromax as the primary
mobile-phone seller brand in India in 2nd quarter of 2014 for the 1st
time ever overtaking Samsung capturing 17 % market share up from 13 % in 1st
quarter of 2014. The report concludes that in the smartphone business Samsung
is leading with a 25.3% market share, while Micromax has only 19 % market
share.

Micromax also
became the leading feature phone supplier overtaking Nokia for the 1st
time, includes the report. Grippingly in this report, Motorola was numbered as
four in the list with a share of 4.3%. Motorola has claimed to sell 1 million Motorola smartphones
in India. Remember the research doesn’t given any specific
rating on how many shipments were seen overall. According to IDC’s quarter 1
results for Indian market, the overall Indian mobile phone
market sold nearly 61.07 million units (This includes both smartphone shipments
which are greater than ever and feature-phone shipments which are deteriorating).
Smartphone shipments stood at a sum of 17.59 million.

The IDC numbers had highlighted a much altered
picture in quarter 1 to the extent the mobile market is concerned. According to Counterpoint,
Samsung had a 20% overall share of the overall mobile market,
and a 35% smartphone market share. Micromax was overall ranked three in the mobile
market with a 12% share, while it had a 15% market share in smartphones (2nd
rank). Thus according to Counterpoint, the representation has transformed radically
and yet we don’t have the details of how.
Given that
Micromax’s two main launches these were the Unite 2 and Canvas Windows smartphones. As
far as Samsung is concerned, internationally quarter 2 has not been a very kind
quarter. Samsung’s profits have collapse as users
have gone for cheaper mobiles. And now with India receiving smartphones
from Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Gionee etc, there is no dilemma
that the Indian smartphone market is going to change significantly.
