In a research done by a
group of researchers at Stanford University and the Israeli defense company
Rafael, it was found that we can track someone’s smartphone by knowing that how
much battery is used by him/her. They researched on it and it was found that it was 90 percent accurate. The important thing is that you need not to take
permission from user for any type of data to be shared.
The name of this technique
is “PowerSpy” and you can gather information regarding the location of Android smartphones.
They do this by knowing how much power is used in how much time and track the
device by using this information. Power used depends on many factors like
getting a signal, how much away the device is from a transmitter and many more.
This technique works if and
only if the person has traveled along a particular route before. The researchers gathered the data and then compared it with an LG Nexus 4 smartphone. During
the test, they found that they were able to get the desired location with 90%
accuracy.
The researchers also
concluded that the device which is having less number of apps are easy to track as
compared to the device which has more. As the power consumption is less and
power used by these devices are consistent.
