Apple Invests $2 Billion To Convert Doomed Sapphire Plant To Data Center



Apple had earlier paired up with GT Advanced Technologies to come up with scratch resistant sapphire screens for apple devices. It was expected that GT Tech would suffice element for limited edition turquoise iPhones but it seems ill fate has struck them. Apple gave them a loan of about $ 378 million in advance but they received only 10 percent of the sapphire they were supposed to. GT technologies announced bankrupt and now it will sell its furnaces to settle more than 400 billion debt with Apple.

Bloomberg reports that the Arizona plant will now serve as Apple’s data center and Apple claims, it will be solar powered. The data centers provide computing strength to iCloud, iTunes, Siri and other products. This multi – billion is the highest they’ve ever invested in. Job openings which were estimated to a 2000 formerly will now get reduced to 150 direct and 300–500 for construction and support. Apple’s motive was to create job opportunities in US but now it may make them more dependent on production in foreign countries. Apple is also poised to create 70 megawatts of solar energy which could power 14,500 homes in States.

Sapphire is needed for the fingerprint sensors in iOS devices mainly iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus, covering camera lens and also in the upcoming iWatch. It is envisioned that Apple may strengthen its ties with Rubicon – the company which currently supplies sapphire to Apple
