Difference Between JailBreak, Rooting and Unlocking

Our PCs are not but our phones and tablets are such devices that have to undergo jail breaking, rooting and unlocking in order to achieve or do things that aren't allowed by our manufacturers and carriers.

Although, one should keep in mind the laws regarding the three gems of phones' and tablets' world- Jail breaking, Rooting and Unlocking. These laws differ from country to country.

Let us start with Jail breaking:-

JAIL BREAKING:

There are some limitations given by device's manufacturer. The process of removal of such limitations is termed as jail breaking. Such a process is generally performed on Apple devices. 'Apple devices' here means iPhone/iPad i.e. Apple iOS devices. The iOS app store can't contain all your desired/required apps. So you would want to install third party software, which is obviously outside the app store. Mind one thing - jail breaking is used for piracy but not ONLY for piracy. It actually allows to change your default web browser, you can have a mail client of your own choice(other than the default one). In simple words, you can use software which are not approved by apple, via jail breaking.

If given a way to some of the limitations, jail breaking can be done on other devices too. For eg, Microsoft Surface RT jailbreak. It helps in Windows RT systems. By default, you are only allowed to run desktop applications by Microsoft. This "default" is handled by Microsoft Surface RT.

It is hence obvious that companies like Microsoft and Apple dont want you to go for jailbreaking.

To perform a jailbreak, one needs to get accomplished in finding vulnerability in security; this would allow one to completely exploit or rather utilize the device and get around the manufacturer safeguards.

Google is exception in this, unlike Microsoft and Apple. Google allows you to run third party applications and so, no jailbreaking is required in Android.

ROOTING:

Rooting is the process by which you can get the “root access” to the device.  Rooting is mostly performed on Android devices, with some times applied on Nokia’s symbian (retired) and on Linux. For more details on rooting, check out Rooting in detail. I feel the necessity of explaining the unblocking of boot loader in this article:

Android is an open-source operating system, so it source code can be modified into a new version! Cyanogenmod (custom ROM) is a custom ROM which exists entirely due to this open source programming.

Most of the android phones come with the locked boot loaders. A locked boot loader would only boot the manufacturer or carrier’s approved version of android which comes along the device. Now the solo purpose of unlocking a boot loader is to install the custom ROMs!

Unlocking the boot loader may, in some cases, require a security exploit, although companies like HTC and MOTOROLA allow this unlocking of their bootloaders. Nexus devices are available for unlocking, as they are here for the developers (pun intended)!

Non-Android operating systems can be installed in your device if you unlock the boot loader! For instance, Nexus can take in the desktop version of Ubuntu with unblocked bootloader. yeah that’s obvious, the part which tells us that the device must be compatible with the OS to be installed. Keep in mind that these OSs aren’t particularly stable.

Now is the time of the third gem to be explained:

UNLOCKING:

Some of the phones come with a contract. This contract is with the carrier’s SIM network company. This contract lets the device in such a way that if any other SIM is inserted in the device, you will see the incompatibility message on your screen and your phone will be locked; resisting you from using any other SIM. So for using any other SIM, you need to “unlock” your phone. Now most of the times, an unlocked phone is provided. As soon as your contract is settled, many carriers will provide the same, but without a contract, there is no such privilege provided. Yeah there are some ways which can unlock your phone without a career’s permission too!

On the whole, you should try the above three gems for your iOS and Android devices. Furthermore, please follow instructions and guidelines from our website and be the geek, just click HERE.
