Various
technologies in the world of wireless phones have been labeled with
"G" ratings which stands for "Generation". Technically it has a very
complex meaning but to the common customer of mobile phone it simply indicates
how fast the network is and the phones that use it, can receive and send data,
like e-mail and Web pages. Mostly mobile phones today come with 2G network and
therefore they send and receive data very slowly.

Second
generation wireless service is also known as Personal Communications Services
(PCS). It refers to digital voice cellphone systems organized in the 1990s. 2G
transmits both data as well as voice, using circuit-switched technology where
each call needs its individual cell channel. The main focus is on voice
communications. 2G technology criteria comprises of Code Division Multiple
Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), and (Global System for
Mobile Communication (GSM). It also deals with secondary services such as data
and SMS.
