Modular mobiles are to some degree of a debatable topic.
From one perspective, the ability to tweak and replace particular segments of
your smartphone is the ideal remedy to all the problems that we face. Then
again, there has been a lot of concern regarding the e-waste generation and its
effective handling plans. Whatever be the conclusion, we know one thing for
sure and that is modular phones are going to be cool.
Project Ara was highly appraised on its inception but,
once the idea was out, we knew it was only a matter of time when other
companies would pursue the modular smartphone. The first competitor appears to
have emerged named Vsenn.
According to Vsenn, its phone will have four main
upgradeable features namely,
- the Camera,
- the Battery,
- the Processor,
- and RAM,
But you’ll probably have to replace the final two at
the same time, rather than independently. Its also possible to modify the look
and feel of the phone using replaceable back covers. Basically our imagination
is the only limit to your customisation ability.
Vsenn’s phone will be using stock Android as its
operating system plus it promises four years of guaranteed software updates.
Vsenn is also laying emphasis on security features including encryption and unrestricted
access to a VPN network.
Vsenn has however posted an image on Twitter which suggests
that there’s at least a prototype or a design in place.
