Nowadays
data theft and information hacking has become a quite a common thing. People lose
their phone in the hands of the thief but one can never be certain that why a thief
took their phone? He/she may looted your phone for personal use or maybe he is an
information thief.
Just
imagine that your phone is lost and your information and data is in the hands
of a criminal and you never know what he/she is going to do with.
So
please be at safer side and protect your important data before anything happens
to your phone.
Here
are the things which you can do to increase the protection of your smartphone
Note: I have mentioned measures which can be used with
any smartphone independent of the OS but some bit and bytes may change.
Activate remote features
Android Device manager let you to track and provide you the access control
over your smartphone. You activate this feature by to your Google Settings menu
and selecting “Android Device Manager” option. Then just select the boxes for
locking, remotely location, and resetting your phone.
If you have just lost your device then first thing
you should do is Log In to your Android Device Manager site using your Google
ID and your password.
As you logged in, you can see the list of all the
devices that are connected to your account. Now choose the device whose
location you want to find out. As soon as you select the device, location of
that device will be marked on Google Map but of-course your device must
connected to some cellular network or a public Wi-Fi otherwise you will not be
able to locate your device.
Now you set the options to lock and wipe your phone.
Remember you can only wipe the internal memory of
your phone, so be careful what you store on your memory card.
Also, if phone is offline then nothing will happen
but as soon as it connects to the internet all your commands will execute.
iOS and Windows phone users can Find My Phone to
execute the same functionality.
iOS user need to activate the Find My Phone option present inside the iCloud, that is present in the Settings menu.
Windows phone user also need to enable Find My Phone option
present in Settings menu.
Blackberry users can use a feature Blackberry Protect which
you can find inside the System Settings menu.
Lock the screen
Always have a lock on your screen. It totally
depends on you, how you want your screen to be locked?
You can use pin, password, pattern lock, or any
third party app. Choose any of these options to lock your phone and remember
“Precaution is better than Cure”.
I am sure, you must have used the lock screen option
but if not then go inside the settings and scroll down until you find the
relevant option and configure security settings according to your need
Back up your files
When you lost your phone, it is well and good that
you located and wiped the data on your phone but what happen to your important
data like contacts, apps, etc.
No need to worry, Google will take care of it but
you need to let Google know about it. For that, choose the Backup and reset
option from your setting menu. Now will Google will synchronize your contacts, Wi-Fi
password, email to the cloud which you can use in future.
Same as Android, iPhone also provide the Storage
and Backup option which present under iCloud present in the Settings me.
Windows Phone users can Back up their data using OneDrive
or Dropbox.
Blackberry user can try SugarSyn or Panda Cloud Drive to backup and restore data.
Encrypt your data
To increase the level of security in your android
smartphone you can do the data encryption. Encryption can save your data from
hackers that are capable of bypassing normal screen lock.
Some encrypting data may slow down processes in
smartphone but at least you will have better security.
To encrypt the data follow these steps
Go to Settings
and choose Security option.
Inside Security, you will find the option to Encrypt your phone. Encrypting your entire phone may take some time
so be patient. Encryption can’t be undone normally. To remove encryption you need to factory reset your phone.
iPhone user don’t have to do the extra work because iPhone encrypts your data
as soon as lock your phone.
Blackberry user can encrypt their important data by enabling Content
Protection. Just go to Option > Security options > General Settings
and enable Content Protection option. You have choice to apply the protection
to your Address book but if you choose it than you will lose the Caller ID function.
So first think choosing it.
For Windows phone I didn’t get perfect
solution for encrypting data but if know the solution then share the solution
with our readers.
