The acquisition of Nokia's mobile-phone empire by Microsoft is finally complete. However unburdening itself with mobile-phone manufacturing business isn’t the end for Nokia.
This Finnish Tech giant still retains Nokia’s other ventures like HERE maps, Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), and a large number of patents. Nokia is one of the biggest telecom and mobile companies that we know of but its roots date far back to times when Finland was a still a part of the Soviet Empire.
In 1865, Fredrik Idestam started a wood pulp mill. The name ‘Nokia’ came to light when a second processing unit was opened on the banks of the river “Nokianvirta”. By the year 1922, Nokia had acquired ‘Finnish Cable Works’ and the ‘Finnish Rubber Works’.
Venturing further into multiple fields of businesses, Nokia began to produce communication cables, tyres, plastics, electricity generation machinery, papers, footwear, capacitors, robotics, chemicals and aluminium. However in the 80s, Nokia made a historical decision and diverted their focus to the “telecommunication” industry. Thus Nokia’s mobile phone empire was formed.
The Nokia that we know today, is the sum of all the phones it has manufactured in the last 3 decades.
Let us go through the memory lane and revisit this amazing series of iconic mobile phones that has made the name Nokia famous across the globe and synonymous to cell phones.
