Project Ara: Most awaited Google’s modular phone project

Google’s project has been creating a lot of buzz recently and I have to say I am also pretty excited about it. When I first heard about Project Ara I felt that the idea of modular phone is great however it was highly unlikely for it to be realty. But Google has made it possible!!!

When the concept of modular phone was introduced many people criticized it and this project was nearly nipped in the bud but thanks to Google, it has been taken up and developed into reality.

Below are some details about Project Ara.

What is Project Ara?

It is a name given to Google’s initiative that aim’s to develop open, free hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. It consist of modules and endoskeleton frames which are also known as “endos”. You can look into some of the pictures to get an idea of Project Ara

Things that one should know about Project Ara

► As the concept of Modular phone suggest that it going to be infinitely customizable phone. You can customize according to your need. For Ex: If you like to hold on to good memories with pictures then you can take good camera in your modular phone or maybe if you are gamer then you can take extra RAM for the same phone.

► If you want just the basic phone i.e. you don’t need high features and functionality then this will be the cheapest phone. The starter model will cost around $50 which will be called “grayphone”

► Google is trying to do this project as fast and efficiently as possible. Google plans to release its first modular phone into the market in January 2015.

► Google definitely thinks of Project Ara as an Android, for hardware
Android is really doing well because of the joint effort of Google and various software developer across the globe who have embraced it. The same thing is with Project Ara, this project enables even the small companies with their inventive ideas to make modules of phone and enable them to market to the phone owners.

► The phone is not as bulky as many of you would have expected
The Modular phone is made joining several modules. So, the thought would definitely come to your mind that this phone will be very bulky but it is not.

► After reading about Modular Phone one might think of what would happen if you drop your modular phone. Will the parts stay together or will they fall apart? Good news is modules are joined together by the use of captive technology and also, super magnet combined with latches are used to make it a tough phone, as tough as a typical smartphone.

► Modules will be encased in the covers that can be generated, of-course on demand, using the 3D printer technology designed by 3D systems. That means consumers will be able to choose the custom design which can produced in no time.

► This project will definitely require lot of enthusiasm from third parties.
